Self-care September

I just love the concept of self-care. It conjures up images of lightly scented bubble baths with candles round the room, walks through sun-dappled forests, a luxurious massage, the most delicious meal possible. All those are self-care, of course, but even more important than what you do is the attitude behind it.

I deserve this. I am worthy of care.

Women, and particularly women our age, are often more about caring for others than for ourselves. We care for our partner, our parents, our friends. If we have children, we’ll remember those early years when we gave our time, energy, sleep – sometimes even the food off our plates! – to nurture our little ones. Now those little ones are grown, we may be nurturing their little ones! And our parents? They’re getting on now, and may need support and care. (Or they may have passed, and we miss the care they used to give.)

We have long to-do lists, and though we may be on our list, we’re right down at the bottom. Because other things, other people, are more urgent, more important. And we routinely get bumped off that list. “I can do it tomorrow.”

This month, let’s stop that. Let’s put ourselves at the top of our list. Let’s do one thing each day that’s just for us. It doesn’t have to be big or time-consuming … but it does need to be savoured. It’s not just one more item on the endless to-do list. It’s a time to nourish our own self.

“I am doing this because I am worthy of care.”

I suggest you download that calendar, and do each day’s item. A small gift to your own lovely self, every day. A hug from a friend – you!

Hugs,

Ilona
