2 of Swords
This is a card many people find worrisome when it appears for them, but I’ve always really liked it. Part of that is the artwork for the card in my favourite deck, the Mucha Tarot, which I find absolutely breath-taking. Seriously. The first time I opened this new deck, and went through it card by card, it made me gasp, just a little.
But I also love the idea of this card. It’s the card for those times when you’re stuck. A decision has to be made, and you just can’t do it. You’ve looked at it inside and out, back and forth, top to bottom … and you can’t choose. Both options look equally good – or equally bad! Each option has something really appealing (or appalling). There is nothing that you can see to tip the scale one way or the other.
But there is, you know.
Your emotions.
Not your logical, methodical reason. Not your intellect. You’re stalled because you’ve done all that. You’ve looked at your options, you’ve evaluated them carefully, you’ve made your list of pros and cons. You have used your powerful brain for its best purpose: to consider, weigh, and analyse. And it hadn’t tipped you over into a decision.
Do you know what? This is normal. In fact, it’s impossible to make a decision without emotions. Have you ever heard of the fellow who had surgery to remove a tumour, and with it, lost the part of the brain that connects the frontal lobes (the part that makes decisions) with the part that deals with emotions? He became an entirely, 100% rational human being. Did that make him the best decision-maker ever, cutting briskly to the heart of the issue, with no messy, murky emotions interfering?
Nope. Absolutely the opposite. Without emotions to tip the scale one way or the other, every decision, no matter how simple, became impossible. Where to go for dinner? No longer could he say, “I feel like Thai food tonight!” Because he didn’t ‘feel’ anything. Instead, he had to analyse everything: the distance, price, weather, service, the lighting, how crowded it might be at every hour of the day … every single detail. And since he never got that little jolt of emotional resonance for any of these factors, he simply could.not.make a decision. His lack of emotions, with the concomitant inability to make decisions, cost him both his marriage and his job.
So the Two of Swords is telling us: when you’re stuck, when you’ve done your due diligence, when you’ve analysed and considered and balanced, and you just can’t decide? Go with your gut. Now is the time to put the brain aside. It’s done its best, but you’re not there yet. Go with your gut.
Not sure how to do that?
Flip a coin. Really. Once that coin is in the air, you’ll know how you want to it to land, and that will be your decision for you. Or maybe, you won’t know for sure until a split-second later, when it does land, and you’ll have that instantaneous feeling of relief – or dismay. There’s your decision. (Because of course you’re not obliged to take the action determined by the coin toss. It was only the means to let you know what you really wanted.)
So, the message for November is not to dispense with your brain and all thinking. You were given your brain for a reason, so use it! But understand that it doesn’t know everything.
The message for November: Trust your gut.
