Happy Gratitude Day!
It is Thanksgiving this weekend here in Canada, a good time to consider gratitude. Gratitude, I think, goes deeper than simple thankfulness. When I was a child, I could rhyme off a list of things I was thankful for, sincerely thankful for … but gratitude, I think, is more than that. Gratitude is something I have achieved in adulthood, and has become richer and deeper as the years pass.
We are thankful for specific things — a gift, a sunny day, a kind friend. Gratitude? It’s more global. Gratitude is a mindset. Gratitude underscores everything we do, think, experience. If we live in gratitude, our lives are infused with joy and delight in a way we’ll never achieve without it.
I’ll be sixty on my next birthday. I am grateful for things my childhood self took entirely for granted. My health, for example. I’ve had some serious scares this past year – got the final “all clear!” only last week, hurrah! – and I have friends whose lives include chronic pain, illness, or bodily frailty. As my mother famously said, “Once you hit sixty, all bets are off.”
I’m grateful for life itself. I have lost a friend or two in recent years. It’s a wake-up call to your own mortality, losing a friend. No longer is death something so far in the future that it feels theoretical. It really happens. And one day, of course, it will happen to me.
None of this makes me sad, though. Instead, I am grateful. Grateful for every moment I’m alive — even the boring ones, even the frustrating ones! I’m grateful for my healthy (if occasionally creaky) body.
And when we focus on the gratitude, really focus on it, and let ourselves sink down into it and feel it … joy wells up.
Gratitude = Joy.
